tales from an ordinary world

Whenever I need inspiration, I return to Steve Kilbey. Gilt Trip is filling the room while I write this - I knew I bought those nice speakers for some reason or other...

I'm "socializing" tomorrow. By turning up to a Quake day. No, really. I'm No Good At Quake, though - It means I'll never make it with these younger geek types. Somehow, I'm not sure I see that as a problem. I guess I'm still in denial ?

Before you head off, go and read about Emperor Norton. Now there's something for us to aspire to.

I was sitting outside the esteemed Degraves Espresso Bar as usual, looking at my newly purchased Muslimgauze and Pablo's Eye CDs. A few minutes after I put them away, some guy from another table came up and asked me what they were. I explained how it was ambient music (on reflection, I was incorrect, but I'm not sure what to call it). "Oh wow. You don't look the type", he said (maybe it was my blue hair ?), and so we chatted for a while about how cool ambient music was. Nifty.

I'm slightly concerned that I was feeling more motivated to do some work on my website (you might have noticed it by now...) after a small amount of Emergency Calming FluidTM - well, that's what a friend at Monash called it when he gave me some for my birthday. Still, if I was an alcoholic I guess my liquor cabinet wouldn't be full of stuff I bought last year (or earlier).

I finally found Beat, which I'd been after ever since I heard Fear of Flying on RRR about 2 years ago. Woo !

Oh yeah, I started my new job yesterday. Having already met and, more importantly, been to the pub with most of my colleagues (although most of them are overseas until later this week), it seemed more like coming back to work after a holiday rather than a Shiny New Job. But that's cool - bugger the fanfare, I just want to get on with doing stuff for the time being.

Droo brought me back a Palm V from his JavaOne excursion. It's very pretty, and now I can finally join in with all the PalmSex games (you know, where you use the InfraRed stuff to beam things to each other) that everybody else was getting up to while I sat there all alone with my old Palm Pro...My Nokia 6110 does InfraRed too, but it's only a half-arsed implementation, and so my Palm V can't talk to it, or vice-versa. I can, however, get the phone to print a phone number (one at a time, it seems) to an IR-capable printer, which means I get a single blank page with one name and phone number up in the top left corner. And it's in boring old Courier, for god's sake. How silly.

I kinda helped Ana move stuff back to her parent's place yesterday. She's going. To Amsterdam. For up to 3 years (at least, I suppose). Maybe in some other lifetime I'd have thrown it all away, asked her to marry me, followed her there, or whatever. But I dunno. It just doesn't seem like the Right Thing To Do. She's a great friend, I care for her very much, and I'll miss her a lot when she goes. It's a shame things didn't quite work out in the end when we were Going OutTM, but that's life I guess. It's much better that we're still good friends...

A Most Enjoyable Afternoon Indeed. In some weird synergistic serendipity I managed to constructively spend my afternoon in the company of 2 different friends (ie. one after the other) lunching at Southgate, walking around on perfect sunny day (in the middle of winter !), checking out the Signs of Life exhibition just before it closed, a nice mexican dinner at Little Reata, and even a film (although since my friend had already seen Star Wars and Austin Powers we ended up seeing My Favourite Martian. Ah well). Why can't every Sunday be like this ?
