I found something called LongPlayer on FreshMeat today, which looks suitably useful. After all, I fit the target audience :

It seems to Just Work so far - point it at your songs and let it go, rating songs as they come up. It'll be a little while before I'll know how useful it is (in terms of playing stuff I haven't heard in a while, and/or stuff I like more), but we'll see. I'm happy that it talks to XMMS rather than running mpg123 (or whatever), since this means I still get to have all my XMMS plugins doing their thing.
