jabber.org.au have opened their public Jabber service. Another blow for (geek) freedom, though they're not yet running any transports to the big 3rd-party proprietary Instant Messaging systems. Still, it's useful enough, especially if you run a decent multiprotocol IM client (GAIM for one, or Proteus for the Mac). Tell yer friends!

I may not (so far) run the kind of blog that posts social conscience linkage - other friends seem to have it covered better than I could manage (yes, I'm aware that's no excuse), but this doesn't mean that I don't care about the State of ThingsTM.

Is there any advantage to using jabber.org.au over jabber.org?

You'd probably have to ask the organization's spin doctors about that. Apart from the National Pride(tm) aspect, it's hard to say. Even though they don't run any 3rd party transports themselves, you can still use ones off other public Jabber servers. It's been ages since I bothered to try and make Jabber do all my other IM systems as well, though - the constantly shifting sands of the Big Guys makes it hard to keep the transports working.
