I neglected to mention this earlier, but I've overturned my initial (slight) doubt and really come to like (and recommend) the Willard Grant Conspiracy + Telefunk in the fishtank release. It works really well because Telefunk's electronics are tastefully (and rather minimally) layered over WGC's folky guitar atmosphere. It's at least as good as, and possibly even consistently better than, last year's Low + Dirty Three in the fishtank team-up. I dunno who came up with this "let's pick two interesting bands, stick them together in a studio and see what happens" idea at Konkurrent, but they deserve a medal. Two of them.
I still don't really know anything about Telefunk, but I'll have to go and dig up their 2 albums. Ah, their website has a track off each album. It also mentions :
Since the collaboration with WGC worked out so well there are plans to make another record together.
...which is the kind of thing people always say, but here's hoping that it's actually true.
While I'm at it, here's a couple of pictures of the WGC's rather formidable Robert Fisher (he of the voice that rivals Johnny Cash), who's been doing a "Songwriter Circle" tour with Steve Wynn and a few others (via the WGClist).

I may not (so far) run the kind of blog that posts social conscience linkage - other friends seem to have it covered better than I could manage (yes, I'm aware that's no excuse), but this doesn't mean that I don't care about the State of ThingsTM.
