I haven't been carrying my discman around much lately, which makes it hard to concretely associate songs with events and places - I've been doing all my listening at home (or occasionally at work). But I remember as a ten year old, visiting the War Memorial in Canberra. As we drove out, Stairway to Heaven was on the radio, and for a long time afterwards I couldn't hear it without conjuring up random terrible imagery of pilots going down in flames, and such. I wonder what songs other people have come to associate with Bad Things, but it's not the kind of thing they want to talk about, I suppose.

I may not (so far) run the kind of blog that posts social conscience linkage - other friends seem to have it covered better than I could manage (yes, I'm aware that's no excuse), but this doesn't mean that I don't care about the State of ThingsTM.

I'd suppose of those songs are going to be private terrible moments. There's an old Split Enz song, Six Months in a Leaky Boat (from Time and Tide, which I'll admit to liking quite a lot), which for me is indelibly connected with an horrific start-line accident at the 1982 Gran Permio di San Marino. Channel 9 used to have a nice line in throw-to-ad music, but in this instance they connected an eery song with a horrible spectacle.

"Walkürenritt" by Wagner comes to mind but that is basically because it was used in "Apocalypse Now" when the helicopters arrive...
Besides everything by Godspeed You Black Emperor! but especially this song with the preacher (1st record?). That sounds like the announcement of the end of the world to me. And I am always disappointed that the world is still there after the song. Just joking.
Some songs on the first 16HP are also very spooky.
