Walking down Brunswick St on Saturday, I passed this furniture shop, which sells CD-shelving in a variety of sizes. I'm pretty sure this is the sort that an old friend of mine's had in his house for years. They look good, and it seems to cost somewhere around a dollar per CD (depending on the type of wood you want, it's either $995 or $1100 for something that'll hold about 1078 CDs).
I won't be doing anything about this until after my Singapore trip in August, so while I'm waiting, I don't suppose anyone can recommend alternatives for me to consider ?

I may not (so far) run the kind of blog that posts social conscience linkage - other friends seem to have it covered better than I could manage (yes, I'm aware that's no excuse), but this doesn't mean that I don't care about the State of ThingsTM.

Hi. I have around 500 cds, and I am constantly moving. Finally I made the switch over to the giant Case-Logic slipcases which hold around 250 per case. The portability is wonderful, and you don't have to discard the artwork either (although I store box sets, digipaks, etc in a separate box near my records). If you don't forsee ever moving, I suggest building your own cabinet as the carpentry involved is not that difficult and the cost of lumber is pretty minimal.

i remember when my 2-CD-high Case Logic case, carrying 36 CDs (I think), was my pride and joy. I took it in my bag everywhere i went, with my discman. No more did I have to agonize over a mere few hours of music for each day - I could decide at the time. It also helped with the radio shows I did at the time... Later, I upgraded to a 1-CD-high box-like case that heled 50 CDs, but after another 6 months, I went down to a 40-odd CD case that also had a holder for a discman. It does the job now, especially since i bought an iRiver Slim-X in February. Given that I haven't moved house in 4 years (!) now, I'm in the market for something a bit more solid, and more permanent, that holds the full cases.
My sister managed to get some bookshelves (resized to the appropriate height) from a furniture shop somewhere out in the suburbs near where she lives. But the DIY thing has a certain appeal...
Thanks. You've certainly placed numerous thoughts into my head.

Every time I need more CD storage I head along to Ikea (having done so again only yesterday). It's a bit daft to do it like that because you wind up with a whole bunch of different types of racks after a few years ('cos they keep changing their range). Having said that, the shelving I bought yesterday was the same as the last two I bought there and holds 180 CDs for $90. The rack is thin and tall (taller than me) so it doesn't take up much floor space and it comes in a few different finishes. I've got three of them now and because the shelving is fully adjustable, I've now reconfigured the first one to hold DVDs instead of CDs. My criteria for CD storage has been (a) cheap (b) plain shelving (not 1 slot per CD) and (c) adjustable. If I was going to replace all of my racks, I'd probably look at some tall, plain shelving, custom-built if necessary.
