happy like the tiny mice

I'm not sure how long Muscle Shoals Records (right up at the top end of Lygon St, in East Brunswick) has been around, but I noticed it a few months back when I heard Tangerine Dream (Exit, it turned out to be) coming from some speakers above a shop doorway while walking down the street. I've only tackled their 7-inch section so far (twice), but I've found a few interesting (or, at least, fun) things there.

last time:

  • Pere Ubu - Not Happy

Pere Ubu - Not Happy: with Lonesome Cowboy Dave on the other side - "hi, my name is David, and I've got a hat the size of Ooooklahoma!". Classic.

  • The Triffids - Beautiful Waste / Property Is Condemned

The Triffids - Beautiful Waste / Property Is Condemned: A shiny but uninspiring cover. Still, the songs are great and it's history now!

  • Died Pretty - Stoneage Cinderella / Yesterday's Letters

Died Pretty - Stoneage Cinderella / Yesterday's Letters: the single from their first album, which I've yet to own (though I've got everything after it, I think). More history - even if he was the ugliest man in rock, a friend used to tell me.

    Japan - Life in Tokyo

Japan - Life In Tokyo: I kinda bought it for the gorgeous photo on the cover (well, and I don't have any Japan on vinyl, either). Giorgio Moroder-produced! Lordy.

this time:

  • The Sports - Boys! (What Did The Detective Say?)

The Sports - The Sports - Boys! (What Did The Detective Say?) : more local history - "we're going down to Russell St" having lost its meaning in more recent times - with the still fun-sounding Modern Don Juan on the back.

  • The Lime Spiders - Out of Control

The Lime Spiders - Out of Control: filling another gap in my musical knowledge, but how about the back of the cover there for a classic 80's (rock) band shot?

  • Gary Numan - We Are Glass

Gary Numan - We Are Glass: how does that Erik Satie b-side sound? Predictably, "a product of its time" is probably the best way to put it. It almost makes me think of, well, Japan more than Numan.
