going away, baby

Well, I think I've got it worked out. I can't think of what else to do for this year's February holiday and it's been ages since I travelled inside the country (interstate city work travel notwithstanding), so here's the vague plan:

  • Fly to Perth.
  • Get the Indian Pacific to Sydney.
  • Get on some boringly-named train to Brisbane.
  • Get the Sunlander to Cairns (I'd get the Tilt Train but, like, it doesn't have a Slim Dusty song written about it).
  • Fly home.

I've got about 10 days of slack to stop off in various places. but I'm not really sure where. Is there enough to do in Broken Hill to kill the 3 and a half days until the next train, for instance? Or should I just give into the groupthink and hang around all those costal towns and stuff (I'm a bit of a novice at the whole Queensland Thing, really)? I'm open to ideas. I promise to try and take some nice photos.

I thought about getting a bus somewhere or other, but my girlfriend gave me that look - I felt just like Jonathan Richman and his song You're crazy for taking the bus. But never mind.

Oh yes. here's a nice rail map of Australia, too.

You're not catching the Alice Springs-Darwin train?

When I'm next in Australia with time and money to spare, I intend to do that journey and then catch coaches down the west coast to Perth, breaking the 36-hour or so journey at towns along the way (Broome, Port Hedland and so on).

Nah, I'll do that one next time. I think when I looked a couple of weeks back, I couldn't get tickets for the Ghan for February. It's definitely the wrong time of the year for going to Broome, I hear.

Broken Hill: the Sculpture Park outside town is worth a visit, ideally at sunset.
Check out the murals in the pub in town, filmed for Priscilla. There's enough art in town to keep you busy.
Pro Hart's own gallery has original Degas pieces.
Stay at the youth hostel and swim in the pool.
Drive out to Silverton, check out the artist-run galleries.
