There's a documentary afoot called Don't Think I've Forgotten, covering the 60's and early 70's when Cambodian musicians (Sinn Sisamouth being one of the most famous examples) picked up on western Rock 'n' Roll and made it their own, until the Khmer Rouge came along and put many of them to their deaths. There's a trailer on the site. If you haven't heard Dengue Fever, the Cambodian Rocks compilation (even though most of the tracks have had drum machines laid across them on this one - I don't know if this is true of the 4 CDs available here) or some of the Sublime Frequencies releases (especially Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk and Pop Music Vol. 1), now's the time.

I may not (so far) run the kind of blog that posts social conscience linkage - other friends seem to have it covered better than I could manage (yes, I'm aware that's no excuse), but this doesn't mean that I don't care about the State of ThingsTM.
